Barium Springs Home for Children campus

First Presbyterian Church, Statesville Makes Dinner

The ladies of "Circle Three" sponsored dinner for the families participating in our on-campus Strengthening Families Program. We are extremely grateful to the ladies of Circle Three for putting together a delicious meal for almost 45 parents, children and facilitators. This Circle is one of three Circles at First Presbyterian Church in Statesville that contributes to the well-being of the kids we serve--everything from birthday cakes for children in our group homes to bibs and socks for our Family & Child Development Center. Circle Three collected items for our children at Christmas and are working on an Easter surprise for our Foster Care program.

Selena Walker, the Director of Strengthening Families had a special guest from Raleigh attend this session. Kathy Smith, who is with the Strengthening Families Program Audit office said, "Barium Springs is her only partner in this program where all of the staff have volunteered their time to make this program work. All of the other agencies have found funding to pay their facilitators for their services. And, you all do a wonderful job of meeting and exceeding our expected outcomes."

This program is part of Governor Bev Purdue's Crime Initiative to keep kids from joining gangs and using drugs or alcohol. Ten families are enrolled in a 14-week program that requires Barium Springs to provide a meal for the family.  Facilitators teach the children about drugs and gangs and teach the parents how to spot signs of drug use or gang involvement.  Childcare is provided for children that are ages 3 and younger. Just getting the facilitators to volunteer their time once a week for 14 weeks is a massive undertaking.

Special thanks to Circle Three for making an awesome meal and serving seconds and even thirds to a grateful group!
