History:
Little Joe's is named after the original Little Joe's Church which was built in 1906. The church was named in honor of Joe Gilland, known at the Home as Little Joe. Little Joe was a frail, but warm-hearted young boy, who died at age nine. Among his personal possessions was found a small coin purse containing 45 cents and a note saying the money was for a church. During his lifetime, Little Joe had often talked about building a church on campus, so the children would not have to walk into a nearby town to attend worship services. When Little Joe's story became known, donations from all over North Carolina poured in and later, in 1906, his dream and Little Joe's Church became a reality. Today, we celebrate this historic building with a new facility that mimics the original design and is located on the very spot where it once stood.
Making a Difference:
By leasing space in this facility, your organization will make a difference in the lives of the children we serve. In the true spirit of what Barium Springs is all about, high school students on campus will have the opportunity to set up and tear down for your meeting. This is part of a work/study program that teaches responsibility, accountability and prepares them for the work force.
